How to fish it

• Short pops with the rod tip; let the rings settle before the next pop.
• Pause longer than you think — a lot of strikes come on the dead-still second.
• Work it around shade lines, stick-ups, and anywhere bait is flicking on top.

When it shines

Warm months, early and late when bass look up. Topwater isn't always the highest numbers, but it's the visual thrill — great when you want kids (or yourself) to see the blow-up.
