Pro Tips

• Fish it with a walk-the-dog action (twitch the rod tip rhythmically) to make it dart side to side on the surface, mimicking a wounded baitfish. The erratic movement triggers aggressive reaction strikes.

• Most common beginner mistake: setting the hook when you SEE the strike. Wait until you FEEL the weight of the fish! Bass often swirl at topwater baits before committing.

• Best in shallower water with some wind on it. Dead calm conditions make bass suspicious of surface lures. Early morning and evening produce the best topwater action.

• Color on top of a topwater bait is mostly for you - the fish sees the white belly from below. Most baitfish have white undersides, so that's what matters.

• Use monofilament line for topwater - it floats and helps keep the bait on the surface. Save the braid for heavy cover situations.
